COR-TEN© is a weathering steel developed to eliminate the need for painting. The name COR-TEN© is derived from the properties of this steel being corrosion resistant and tensile strength. The phrase weathering steel is used as the chemical composition that allows COR-TEN© to be resistant to corrosion in comparison to other steels is influenced by the weather. With COR-TEN© steel the surface oxidises as normal however due to its protective layer the surface continually regenerates and develops a protective coating which reduces corrosion and leaves the COR-TEN© essentially maintenance free. After a period of 18-36 months the COR-TEN© weathering will stabilise and produce an attractive and natural rust-like appearance.
COR-TEN© has become increasingly popular in creating outdoor sculptures due to its weathering abilities and durability. To the untrained eye COR-TEN© can appear to be “rusty steel” however in the world of art and architecture COR-TEN© steel is being embraced in urban and commercial sculptures.
